“Daddy!” shrieked the little girl, her eyes wide and laughing, as her father held her on the Ferris Wheel. Her name was Alice, and his name was Walter, and the rain had begun now in earnest and he spread his cloak over his daughter, to keep her dry, and she laughed, and laughed, as they lowered the wheel seat by seat to let the people off, to go and get dry.

“You’re getting wet Daddy!”

“I’ll be all right.”

They stepped off the Ferris Wheel when their turn came, Walter holding his daughter’s hand as she hopped off of the chair, and she smiled at the carnie, the carnie with the mad eyes that all carnies have, who Walter did not look at, and Walter took his daughter to the cotton candy man, standing under the awning by his shop across from the Ferris Wheel, and he took a bite of it, pink and sticky, on impulse, and Alice cried, “Me, me, me too!” and Walter handed his daughter the candy and shook out his cloak and huddled with his daughter underneath the awning.

“It’s gonna be a wet one all week now!” said the cotton candy man, smiling at the man and his daughter.

“Well I hope not,” said Walter.

“Yep,” said the cotton candy man.

“Come on honey, let’s get to our elephant, he’ll be hungry,” said Walter.
